Smith Wigglesworth was a preacher and teacher. I read an
interesting fact on him. He did not learn to read until after he married his wife Polly.
She taught him to read the Bible. He often stated, “It was the only book he
ever read”. He did not permit newspapers in his home, preferring the Bible to
be their only reading material.
I dare say that is a rarity today. When I read this, I
wondered how many homes today have Bibles. If they have one, how many families
read the book collectively as a family and as an individual? Obviously, I don’t
have the statistics on that.
However, that got me to thinking, what if! What if families
began reading the bible together? What changes would come about in their homes,
their lives, and their work? Of course, the changes would spill over in how we
see and interact with our neighbors and treat people in our communities.
Looking around at the things happening in all our communities
such as ––the violence, hatred, rage, anger––all of which are affecting our children,
grandchildren, families and communities around the country, I couldn’t help
but think maybe everyone should try this, reading the Bible. After all, what
could it hurt? If this doesn’t help us, our children, our families and our
communities well then we’ve lost nothing.
A little bit of time, that’s all. However, what if, it did make a
difference! What would it be like? For our children? For our families? For our
communities?
Don’t get upset, no one is infringing on your freedom of
rights, no one says you have to do this. But as intelligent people, we are all
looking for ways to combat these things going on in our communities. We’ve
tried passing laws, curfews, and a myriad of other things that just haven’t
worked. We have placed blame and hurled accusations. So far, nothing has
worked. Even our leaders in government and communities are at a loss of what to
do to change these things. It’s still going on and seems to be getting worse. So
why not try this. What changes can take place if all of us do this?

ReplyDeleteLove this post. Stranded on an island, there's only one "must have" book. The Bible.
DeleteIt's why we must help get Bibles into the hands of all humanity captured by the evils of communism.
Thanks Michael for your post. I agree, that is the one "must have" book. From you mouth to God's ears we need the Bible into the hands of all humanity.
DeleteA solution for our world, our nation, our cities, our communities and OUR families. It starts with the roots of Our families. Good insight, Susan.
ReplyDeleteThank you Annette. The family unit has to be involved in the solutions.
DeleteGreat perspective Susan...The Book has helped many an individual and families alike though trying times for centuries...and these are surely trying times.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your comment.I appreciate it. These are trying times.
DeleteHow very true. A recent Barna report stated that nearly half of American adults wished the Bible had a greater influence in our society, What a difference that would make. Thank you for writing this blog.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for your comment. I agree, there would be a difference if the bible was read. At least it could teach us to love our neighbors.
